Eight Stanzas on the Incomparable

1. Here there is no need for spiritual progress or contemplation, no skill in discourse, no inquiries, no need to meditate, concentrate, or practice mumbled prayers. What is, tell me, the ultimate Reality absolutely certain? Listen to this: do not take or leave, and as you are, just happily enjoy everything.

2. From the point of view of Absolute Reality there is no transmigration. How then is it a question of hindrance for living beings? Since the free being has never had any obstacles, to undertake to liberate it is futile. There is only the illusion of the imaginary shadow of a demon, a rope taken for a snake that produces a baseless confusion. Leave nothing, take nothing, well established in yourself, as you are, spend the time pleasantly.

3. In the inexpressible, (a. see below) what discourse can there be and what path would differentiate worshiped, adored and adored? In truth, for whom and how would a spiritual progress occur, or who would penetrate in stages in the Self? Oh wonder! this illusion, although differentiated, is none other than Consciousness-without-second. Ah! everything is very pure essence tested by oneself. So, do not worry uselessly.

4. This bliss is not like the intoxication of wine or wealth, nor even like union with the beloved. The appearance of the conscious Light is not like a beam of light that a lamp, the sun or the moon, spreads. When one frees oneself from the accumulated differentiations, the state of happiness is a joy comparable to the putting down of a burden, the appearance of the Light is the acquisition of a forgotten treasure: the domain of the universal non-duality.

5. Attraction and repulsion, pleasure and pain, rising and sleeping, infatuation and despondency, etc., all these states participating in the forms of the universe are manifested as diversified, but in their nature they are not distinct. Whenever you grasp the peculiarity of one of these states, immediately alert to the nature of the Consciousness as identical to it, why, full of this contemplation, do not you rejoice?

6. The effectiveness of what currently exists did not exist before; Suddenly, in fact, things always arise in this world. What reality can they claim, thus troubled by the distorting confusion of the intermediate state? (b. see below) What reality is there in the unreal, the unstable, the falsified, in a heap of appearances, in the error of a dream? Remain beyond the imperfection peculiar to the anxieties of doubt and awake.

7. The innate can not be subject to the flow of objective existences; these are manifested only by you. Although deprived by nature of reality, in an instant, by the fault of an error of perception, they take part in reality. Thus springs from your imagination the grandeur of this universe since there is no other cause for its appearance. That is why, by your own glory, you shine in all worlds and, although unique, you are the essence of the multiple.

8. When the Consciousness arises as an immediate contact with oneself then the real and the unreal, the little and the abundant, the eternal and the transitory, which is polluted by illusion and what is the purity of the Self, appear radiant in the mirror of Consciousness. Having recognized all this in the light of the essence, you whose greatness is based on your intimate experience, enjoy your universal power.

(a) The Kashmiri tradition uses the word Anuttara: the leading, the Sans-egal. This Word can also mean the Incomparable, literally: "which is not the highest of two" (because there is no other than him). This is the real nature of any apparent diversity. It has only the conscious light. Even to say that the conscious light is the 'any' is a restriction: there not 'All', not more that it has parts. The conscious light is unthinkable.

(b) This "intermediate state" refers to the second moment of any perception or activity. In the first moment, there is no thought, just a pure light momentum in which the object perceived shines in its true nature, the certainty of I true. In a second moment, in the original fullness appears a separation by which it delimits the object relative to what it is not. The third time, the object is perceived as a fully differential object, with all its features: it is the ordinary perception of sleep.

Huit stances sur l’incomparable, par Abhinavagupta
