Aug 17   Rose to Pulyan typed 1 1960-0817-rose-first 1 pdf 1 to 15   Rose introduces self, mentions McIntyre, asks to correspond.

Doesn't mention experience. Says if you claim to "know" God you are a great, incomprehensible man or a liar. Would like to learn more. Asks about immortality.
Aug 27 Pulyan to Rose   handwritten 4   6, 7, 8, 9 pdf 1 to 15   "What shall I do when I meet a Zen master." "Dribbling, piddling dialectic." 15 bullet points, a through o, in response to R's questions. Attacking is nessary as it exposes the egos.
SEPTEMBER 1960
Sep 1   Rose to Pulyan typed 1 1960-0901-rose 10 pdf 1 to 15   Has a favorable view. Difficult to communicate without knowing the person more. Because of this, offers to visit P. Wants to know aim and system.
Sep 6 Pulyan to Rose   handwritten 5   11 to 15 pdf 1 to 15   Chastizes, "This won't do." Lists 4 individuals he is talking with, including R. Mentions "bipolar mind", and the student getting caught in personality. "When the ego is really threatened … the place will be a shambles."
Sep 10   Rose to Pulyan typed 2 1960-0910-rose-1, 2 16, 17 pdf 16 to 33   Objects to the way P has been speaking to him. Asks for his qualifications.  Offers to visit P - mentions difficulty; better to convey intuitively
Sep 11   Rose to Pulyan typed 2 1960-0911-rose-1, 2 18, 19 pdf 16 to 33   Say's it's up to P to prove his claims. Still a testy letter; but says he remains open. However, he doesn't want to guess. Mentions his experience and the poen, but does not mention sending a copy.
Sep 17 Pulyan to Rose   handwritten 4 1960-0917-pulyan-1 to 4 20 & 21 missing + 22, 23 pdf 16 to 33   (PDFs were mlissing pages 20 and 21 but Michael scanned to JPG)  Pulyan counters R's objections one by one, talks about the egocentric position and devices used to protect the ego.
Sep 21 #1   Rose to Pulyan typed 2 1960-0921-rose-1, 2 24, 25 pdf 16 to 33   Expresses frustration at the way P is challenging every word, says that by definition everything sa person does is from the ego. Justifies his right to know what P has that would give him the authority hec claims.
Sep 21 #2   Rose to Pulyan typed 1 1960-0921-rose-3 26 pdf 16 to 33   [Same day.] Very short. Softens his position. Says he's willing to work.
Sep 21 #3   Rose to Pulyan typed 1 1960-0921-rose-4 27 pdf 16 to 33   A more legible copy of #26, received back from Pulyan, with handwritten numbering on it, 1-5. P's next letter references these numbers.
Sep 23 Pulyan to Rose   handwritten 6   28 to 33 pdf 16 to 33   Lays out "EP vs AP", "Ego 1 vs Ego 2" and "Personality of the Master" Editorial comment: A masterpiece.
Sep 26   Rose to Pulyan typed 3 1960-0926-rose-1, 2, 3 34, 35, 36 pdf 34 to 53   It's impossible to live without ego and to communicate without words; therefore R doesn't understand attacks on same. Has a weariness of life where ego is necessary. Wants to be One, not none or nothing. Have a book on Zen but it makes no sense to me.
Sep 28 Pulyan to Rose   handwritten 9 (1, 2 out of order; 8, 9 misssing)   37 to 41 pdf 34 to 53   Page 1 (48) & 2 (49), as noted in handwriting on p 37, are out of order in the series 34-53. Has p. 3 (37), 4 (38), 5 (39), 6 (40), 7 (41) then stops. Missing is 8 (42) but we have. AT's page . numbered 26b. Content: Says R's least letter was "really excellent". then basically picks apart everything R said. "Egocentricity",  “What will happen ... when the universe goes up in smoke”? Masks, the E.P., the Master, some diagrams, "The ego does not surrender 'in vacuo'."

OCTOBER 1960
Oct 3   Rose to Pulyan handwritten 3 1960-1003-rose-1, 2, 3 45, 46, 47 pdf 34 to 53   A pretty bland letter that does not say much. Dissappointing after P's masterpiece of 9/28. R doesn't seem to respond to any of it.
Note:  pages 48 and 49 are out of order (see 9/28 above)
Oct 6 Pulyan to Rose   handwritten 4   50 to 53 pdf 34 to 53   Another masterpiece. The self acts as an obstacle to the light, but this can only be removed by dying. The self thinks it is the final judge, the boss. We need an outside fulcrum, a "friend". The ego must be dethroned. The teacher does not "enjoy" the process; on the contrary, ego-domination has been knocked out of him. What is of the greatest value is not wanted. "Your letter is mostly dialectic, cool intellectual discussion, & seems to get us no further."
Oct 10   Rose to Pulyan typed 2 1960-1010-rose-1, 2 54, 55 pdf 54 to 71   Argumentative. Accuses P of being evasive, of contradicting himself, e.g., that P claims to know "God" etc. but then backs down. Asks for P's view on reincarnation, immortal soul..
Oct 12 Pulyan to Rose   handwritten 8   56 to 63 pdf 54 to 71   Page numbering is out of order. Page 5 is #61 and page 6 is #60.
Oct 17   Rose to Pulyan typed 3 1960-1017-rose-1, 2, 3 64, 65, 66 pdf 54 to 71   Says how much he hates the word God. Objects to P over his term "friendship", says he doesn't like to be "ordered about". Says he ovvered to meet P but was turned down.
Oct 23 Pulyan to Rose   handwritten 2   67, 68 pdf 54 to 71
